Offer Description
The Politecnico di Torino is Coordinator of the European doctoral network “FOURIER - InnOvative ArtiFicial IntelligencE methodologIes for monitoRing and maintaining large scale complex infrastrUctures and obtaining greener, more Resilient and smart societies”, and offers two positions for highly motivated PhD students.
The FOURIER network aims at training young researchers in tackling challenges related to innovative tools for inspection (autonomous and assisted), data processing, management, and protection, decision-making and infrastructure management including social aspects.
FOURIER's main objectives are:
* Establish a network of individual research projects focused on advanced infrastructure monitoring techniques using AI.
* Develop methods for large-scale autonomous monitoring, inspection and proactive testing of complex engineering systems.
* Improve the resilience of infrastructures against failures, accidents, sabotage and disasters.
* Offer innovative research training and knowledge exchange opportunities for doctoral students through cross-border and intersectoral mobility.
The positions are funded for 36 months by the program Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA).
Position 1: Enhancing Infrastructure Inspection with non contact sensing, Multi-Modal Deep Learning and AR Wearable Devices.
This research will exploit non-contact sensing devices such as LiDAR, laser doppler vibrometer (LDV), thermal and hyperspectral cameras etc. The collected data will be used to develop real-time Multi-modal DL models that are able to combine data from multiple sources to increase data extraction and quality with respect to traditional visual based techniques. The extracted processed information will be visualized using AR wearable devices.
In this position, the candidate will take part in secondments at Joint Research Center – Ispra (IT), Smartec SA (CH), and Factor Social (PT).
Position 2: Automated data collection for Progressive Collapse Analysis of communities and infrastructures using UAVs.
In this position, the candidate will take part in secondments at Joint Research Center – Ispra (IT), ASI-Europe (IT), and Vienna Consulting Engineers (AT). The PhD project goal is to install a set of hybrid sensors on a swarm of UAVs that is flying around the urban community collecting data automatically. Data that will be processed using ML algorithms to identify the geometrical, structural, and thermal parameters of the assets. The collected data will then be used to calibrate advanced computational models for progressive collapse analysis of buildings and critical infrastructures.
We offer:
* The possibility to study in a dynamic and international research environment in collaboration with excellent European Companies and Universities and mentored by outstanding academic and non-academic advisors.
* A postgraduate education at an institution that is active and supportive in matters pertaining to working conditions, gender equality and diversity as well as study environment.
* Work and study in Torino, close to nature and rich in art.
The project FOURIER is offering a total of 15 PhD positions, and the candidates will take part in a compelling research and training program. The consortium includes academic and industrial organizations from 9 European countries, making it an interdisciplinary and intersectoral programme.
