TXT is offering an exciting master’s thesis opportunity in the field of radar simulation for aeronautical applications.
Thesis title
GPU Acceleration of Ray Tracing for SAR Radar Simulator using NVIDIA OptiX
Context
The project focuses on SAR/RCS radar simulations. The current simulator uses Intel Embree for ray-object intersection calculations on the CPU. The goal of the thesis is to replace the ray tracing engine with NVIDIA OptiX, leveraging GPU acceleration to significantly improve scalability and performance in high-resolution scenarios.
Planned activities
Analysis of the current Embree-based architecture (C/C++)
Study and understanding of the OptiX pipeline (CUDA-based)
Porting the ray generation and handling logic to a GPU environment
Managing data and memory exchange between CPU and GPU
Integrating the new GPU-based pipeline into the existing simulator
Benchmarking to compare performance and accuracy
Critical analysis of results and potential optimizations
Recommended qualifications
Good knowledge of C/C++ programming
Knowledge of or interest in GPU programming (CUDA)
Strong interest in numerical simulation and algorithm optimization
Additional skills
Good command of English (spoken and written)
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Excellent teamworking abilities, essential in an international context
Flexibility in communication with both internal and external stakeholders
Willingness to travel in both European and non-European contexts
Problem-solving mindset
