Deputy Public Works Director
ABOUT THE POSITION: Under the supervision of the Public Works Director, the Deputy Public Works Director will assist in the day-to-day operations of the Public Works Department. This position will also help monitor and evaluate the efficiency and effectiveness of department service delivery methods and procedures. The deputy will assess workload and support systems to identify opportunities for productivity improvements within the department. The deputy will act on behalf of the Public Works Director in the resolution of departmental personnel matters. He/she will assist in reviewing and revising job descriptions, job announcements, screening job applicants, and will participate in the interview process. The Deputy Public Works Director will help train and motivate department personnel. This position will assist in developing and administering the Public Works operating budget and making recommendations for staffing, equipment, materials, goods, and engineering services. They may approve expenditures and direct and implement budget adjustments as needed. The Deputy Public Works Director performs research for various projects, prepares staff reports, and may assist with presentations to upper management and the Town Council. Researches and prepares necessary code and ordinance changes. Assists in the interpretation of codes and resolving problems when necessary. This position will develop and recommend engineering solutions to complex technical issues; approve plans in accordance with laws, rules, regulations, ordinances, codes standards, and other adopted standards and details. Will confer with and provide technical engineering advice to consulting engineers and contractors on the design, construction, maintenance and repair of streets, sidewalks, traffic controls, and municipal structures and facilities including utilities; prepares and reviews engineering drawings, plans, project budget estimates, reports, and proposed ordinances.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Graduate from a four-year college or university with a degree in civil engineering and a minimum of four (4) years of previous governmental experience, including the last two (2) years in a supervisory role or any equivalent combination of education and experience. Required: Registered Professional Engineer (P.E.) standing is required; must be Arizona registered or be able to obtain Arizona registration within a reasonable amount of time.
COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: The Town of Florence offers a competitive salary for this position, which will depend on experience and qualifications. The full salary range for this position is $99,748-$149,623.
