CMCC Position cod. 12673 Soil and Water Systems Research Division – Research team Deadline: February 28 th, 2025 WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR The Institute for Climate Resilience (ICR) of CMCC is at the forefront of interdisciplinary research that connects climate, ecosystems and society. Its mission is to empower decision-makers with the knowledge they need for both immediate actions and long-term planning, to help guide planning and investments toward a climate-resilient future. ICR launched a new Research Division on Soil and Water Systems (SOWAS) aimed at enhancing expertise in the Earth Critical Zone, the realm where atmosphere, ecosystems, water, soil & rock interact and which most of terrestrial life - including humanity – depends on. We are increasing the research team looking for several (up to four) junior to senior experts on various aspects involving the coupled soil and water systems across spatio-temporal scales, going deeper than the usual consideration of soil-water dynamics in the upper surface layers, and towards a more thorough understanding and more reliable reproduction of the Earth-Human system feedback. Examples of complementary - but not exhaustive - topics are: Supporting the development of a modelling suite aimed at investigating the interactions between surface water and groundwater, also connected to aquifer salinization; Improving the representation of processes over hillslopes up to freshwater bodies, thus connecting upstream to downstream biophysical and biogeochemical cycles and soil-water quantity/quality aspects; Investigating the destabilization effects due to extreme events and other disturbances; Supporting the analysis of soil erosion dynamics accounting for climate change and other anthropic disturbances by adopting data-driven approaches. ABOUT US CMCC Foundation is a cross-cutting scientific research center on climate change and its interactions with the environment, society, the world of business, and policymakers. Our work aims to stimulate sustainable growth, protect the environment, and develop strategies for the adaptation and mitigation of climate change. CMCC's core objective is to conduct cutting-edge science, to train the next generation of scientists at both national and international levels, and to be a beacon for climate modelling. CMCC pursues fundamental and applied science with utmost scientific integrity, prioritizing data-driven science and providing data, information, and research results that can support informed public debate and decision-making processes. To achieve climate research objectives at the highest international standards, we invest in training all our talents, and strive to create a workplace where everyone can excel. At CMCC you will find a strong, professional environment. Join an inclusive community that values diversity, where every voice is heard and respected. Help foster a culture of innovation and societal change, where individuals from all backgrounds can thrive and succeed. Over the last decade, CMCC has experienced extraordinary growth. We are now embarking on a new chapter of our journey that will further boost CMCC’s global position in climate change research…Together ROLE The Researchers report to the Division Director and will collaborate in designing, fine-tuning and/or implementing key research lines and related activities in the context of coupled soil and water dynamics, especially fostering the exploitation, analysis and integration of either new or existing data on soil and water, from measurements to modeling, to feed the formulation and development of further physically-based, AI, and hybrid approaches. According to the Division’s (and Institute’s) Plans, the Researchers will contribute to the Division's Strategic Plan and scientific activities. RESPONSIBILITIES The successful candidates will be responsible for the effective and timely development, implementation, and assessment of the assigned tasks. They are expected to support the advancements, with the other colleagues, of all the prioritized research lines, aimed at developing or reinforcing competencies in fields complementary to the disciplines already interacting at ICR and CMCC. Besides directly conducting research activities, and based on their seniority, they will supervise and guide post-doc to early career scientists in their activities, including growing skills in: writing project proposals, projects’ implementation, peer-review publications, presentation at conferences and conceiving new scientific questions to be answered through research. REQUIREMENTS PhD in hydrological, geological, earth sciences or any soil-water related sciences and engineering or connected subjects. Track record of peer-review publications, as first, corresponding or last (coordinating) author, on the above subjects. Extensive knowledge of Python. Extensive knowledge of physically-based modelling suites or data-driven approaches for assessing processes in Earth’s critical zone. Very good knowledge of the English language; Italian is an asset. Strong motivation is exploring new research fields and disciplines complementary with the overall science at CMCC and ICR. DURATION, COMPENSATION & BENEFITS Please note that this opportunity will be issued both internally and externally. The Researcher will be based in any of CMCC office. The appointment period will be initially of 12 to 24 months starting from March 2025, with a gross annual salary based on qualifications and working experience.
