Workplace Description
The FBK Cyber Security Centre (CS) develops digital technology and cyber security to foster collaboration between the various stakeholders through a combination of IT risk management techniques (in order to develop highly innovative security solutions that will mitigate vulnerabilities and reduce the risk of attacks) as well as trust management techniques (to improve the interaction between people and technology). As part of the FBK mission, which aims to achieve results of scientific excellence and to produce an impact on society, the Center's mission is to make these techniques available to the largest number of organizations, including SMEs, which account for a substantial part of the EU economy but lack cybersecurity expertise. To this end, integrating automated cyber risk assessment support with trust management that will have the ability to produce operational suggestions to assist ICT solutions designers, developers and administrators in their daily activities is critical.
The Digital Solutions and IT Infrastructure Service (SSDIT), included in the Infrastructure and Platforms area, carries out the design, implementation and monitoring of IT infrastructures through a "security by design" approach to protect data and prevent threats. It also ensures the operation of the network and its connected devices, supporting researchers in implementing the systems needed to pursue their projects with the motto "Working safely, easily, from any place, at any time, with any device, in the same way".
The required figure will be placed within the Joint Lab for Cybersecurity, a shared internal hub between the Center for Cybersecurity and the Digital Solutions and IT Infrastructure Service, active since January 1st, 2025. It represents both a first-response task force in the event of incidents and a unified service for training, consulting, and support with custom solutions to common problems, according to the Zero Trust approach, at combined research and production level deriving from internal vertical expertise in digital identity management, risk assessment, cloud-native security, applied cryptography, and administration of complex IT systems. Its objective is to experiment methods to increase incisiveness and proactivity in the field of cybersecurity, and at the same time act as a test bed for the future export of the model as a service to be offered to other provincial bodies and to the local productive sector.
FBK actively seeks diversity and inclusion in the workplace and is also committed to promoting gender equality. To promote the inclusion of disabled staff as per law 68/99, the Foundation is available and interested in evaluating the applications received for technical-scientific domains that do not correspond exactly to this call.
Job Description
In the rapidly evolving landscape of technology and interconnected systems, cybersecurity has emerged as an essential aspect of our digital existence. This open call invites creative solutions to tackle the growing risks to our personal information and sensitive data. As hackers grow increasingly sophisticated, it is essential that we remain proactive in creating strong cybersecurity measures to safeguard ourselves and our information. To improve its overall cybersecurity posture and the resilience of the wider national and European digital ecosystem, FBK is looking for a candidate to work in the Joint lab for Cybersecurity and support the definition, implementation, and validation of a security and privacy by design approach in Zero Trust Architectures in the context of FBK digital infrastructure.
The candidate will have the opportunity to engage in research tasks, rather than being limited to repetitive red and/or blue team activities.
Job Requirements
The position is quite flexible and will be aligned with the candidate's skills within the project's scope, focusing on tasks such as pentesting, red teaming, blue teaming, purple teaming, hardware pentesting, investigating niche research problems,, and more.
The candidate is expected to have prior knowledge of some, not all, aspects mentioned above.
The Ideal Candidate should have: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related fields; A foundational understanding of the main problems and solutions in the field of cybersecurity; Critical thinking and a marked attitude to learning and thinking outside the box in the domain of CyberSecurity; English proficiency, specifically Cambridge B2 level or above; Ability to work in a collaborative environment, with a strong commitment to achieve assigned objectives; Good communication and relational skills.
Additional requirements: Master degree in cybersecurity-related disciplines or equivalent experience. Proficient Italian listening, and advanced Italian talking/writing.
The in-home experience, such as engaging in learning at home, staying updated, and adopting a mindset of "there is always a way to do that," will be regarded as a positive aspect. This includes dedicating time to the subject and demonstrating perseverance and determination. The so-called "hacking" experience will be regarded as a positive asset. High level of cyber-hygiene will be regarded as valuable and will be assessed by the commission during the interview.
During the interview, the commission will evaluate the candidate's thought process rather than solely focusing on its skills, as the discussion will include topics that the candidate has not previously encountered and will examine how it tackles unfamiliar problem-solving scenarios.
The commission will assess work experience favourably, awarding additional points for roles that extend beyond repetitive tasks. For instance, while SOC-like alert checking is deemed repetitive, it still contributes to the accumulation of experience points, even though less points than having performed thoughtful risk assessments.
