WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR
The Division of Regional Models and geo-Hydrological Impacts (REMHI) at the Institute for Climate Resilience (ICR) is seeking for 2 Machine Learning for Climate Science specialists to support the design, development, and deployment of AI-driven applications for climate research. This role focuses on leveraging machine learning techniques to perform data-driven climate analysis at very high spatial and temporal resolution, as well as monitoring and nowcasting of severe weather events using satellite data.
ROLE
The Machine Learning for Climate Science specialist will work closely with the REMHI team to support AI-driven climate science applications. Responsibilities include:
1. Downscaling Climate Data: Developing algorithms to downscale climate data for more accurate predictions and analyses.
2. Monitoring and Nowcasting Atmospheric Events: Implementing systems for the real-time prediction of atmospheric events, including extreme weather.
3. Product Validation: Validating AI-driven products using simulated models and observations to ensure reliability and accuracy.
The role requires proficiency in machine learning, data analysis, and atmospherical science, with experience in satellite data processing, high-performance computing, and model validation.
RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Algorithm Development: Develop and improve AI algorithms for downscaling climate data.
2. System Design and Implementation: Design and deploy systems for real-time prediction (nowcasting) of weather events. Utilize satellite data and machine learning for event detection and forecasting.
3. Data Processing: Process and analyze satellite data for climate predictions and nowcasting systems. Handle large datasets for machine learning and climate analysis.
4. High-Performance Computing (HPC): Optimize software and algorithms to run efficiently on HPC infrastructure.
REQUIREMENTS
1. Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
2. Experience in Data Science, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and AI for geospatial data and climate science.
3. Proficiency in Python and scientific libraries (e.g., xarray).
4. Experience with PyTorch.
5. Basic understanding of high-performance computing (HPC) for large-scale model training.
6. Experience in data preprocessing and model evaluation.
