Institute for Alpine Environment
The Institute for Alpine Environment performs problem-oriented research of mountain environments in the fields of biodiversity and ecosystem functions, sustainability, land-use and climate change, and nature’s contribution to people. For the project ‘Schneewinkel’ biodiversity project in apple orchards we invite applications for the position of a junior researcher. The ideal candidate has a background in biology or natural sciences and has on one hand experiences in the assessment of animals or plants in agricultural habitats, on the other hand a background or profound experiences in the agricultural sector (preferably apple cultivation). The work will be conducted in close collaboration with the colleagues of the Association of Val Venosta producers of fruit and vegetables (VIP). Working location is Bolzano/Bozen with field work in Silandro/Schlanders (Val Venosta/Vinschgau).
The “Schneewinkel” Biodiversity Project started in 2025 and aims at creating a scientific base to promote and increase biodiversity in intensive apple orchards. It tries to develop, evaluate and continuously optimize successful and practicable measures and to strengthen the knowledge and awareness of those involved for the aspects of biodiversity.
The “Schneewinkel” project area extends over 65 to 70 hectares and is located east of Silandro/Schlanders in Val Venosta/Vinschgau and is characterized by fruit cultivation cultivated by different farmers applying integrated and organic management.

Tasks:
* Project coordination in close collaboration with VIP
* Design, implementation and evaluation of biodiversity surveys
* Biodiversity surveys within the “Schneewinkel” project area
* Cooperation with partner organizations
* Project communication for cooperative (VIP) members and the general public
* Development of biodiversity-promoting measures
* Supporting the investigation of the agronomic impact of biodiversity-enhancing measures
Requirements:
* Organization skills, ability to work efficiently and with creativity
* Master’s or bachelor’s degree in the fields of biology or environmental sciences
* Experiences in biodiversity surveys, preferably of either insects, birds or vascular plants
* Experiences with GIS
* Background or profound experiences in the agricultural sector are advantageous
* Very good knowledge of the German language, good English skills
* Good interpersonal and collaborative skills to integrate in a working group and to interact with associated researchers from various institutions and with stakeholders
