At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high-speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling, and digital mobility, we offer our diverse customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80,000 colleagues lead the way to greener and smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.
The Network & Telecom (N&T) Network Designer will join the N&T Team that is part of the System Design team in the Engineering department.
The N&T Network Designer will be responsible for the design of communication systems in Railway projects and tenders.
In the frame of the Railway and Metro projects managed in Italy, the communication system is a key component, allowing communication between all the trackside critical components (Signalling and Safety related communication, Auxiliary System). The communication system relies on Fiber Optic infrastructure and IP technologies, with interconnections with other technologies as required for each project (SDH, MPLS, GSM-R).
In particular, the N&T Network Designer will be in charge of:
* Defining Communication System Requirements (Functional, Non-Functional, Interfaces).
* Developing system documents, specifications, and other technical documents, such as the definition of the Architecture, Bill of material, IP Plan, and Fiber Optic requirements.
* Ensuring that the design of the backbone and/or IP Network systems technically fulfills the defined needs and enhancements (change requests).
* Developing the detailed design of Communication System devices.
* Configuring the Communication System devices (IP switches, Firewall, and other communication devices).
* Ensuring technical consistency and alignment with Project Engineering teams throughout the development.
* Developing typical applications of the system for Generic System/Product validation purposes and managing design feedback from the verification and validation team.
* Providing technical support to Reliability, Availability, Maintainability, and Safety Analysis.
* Providing technical support to V&V (tests in lab) and T&C (tests on field), particularly troubleshooting issues detected in lab and on field.
* Interacting with other project stakeholders, both internal (Project Engineering Manager, System Engineers) and external (Customer, Supplier).
* Contributing to Design Technical review.
* Applying the standard Design methods & tools, configuration & change management processes in accordance with Alstom standards.
Qualification/Requirements
* Degree in IT disciplines: Telecommunication Engineering, Computer or Information Science, Electronic Engineering, or related field.
* Strong analytical skills and work ethic.
* Proactivity, results orientation, and flexibility to work in a dynamic environment.
* Very good communication skills (in Italian and English), including the ability to communicate effectively with both business and technical audiences.
Preferred Skills/Knowledge:
* Familiar with LANs, WANs, routers, firewalls, and TCP/IP.
* Knowledge of cybersecurity principles.
* Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
* Previous experience in network engineering is preferred.
* Experience managing Firewalls (Cisco) is preferred.
* Experience with common network troubleshooting tools (Wireshark, HTTPWatch, etc.) is preferred.
* Setup configuration and troubleshooting of cabled L2/L3 Networks of Hirschmann / Cisco / HP switches is preferred.
