YOUR TEAM
You will be working in a multicultural and multi-disciplinary group, where computational scientists in the fields ranging from physics, to chemistry, to engineering collaborate, each with their own expertise, to carry out common research. The position is at the Computational and Chemical Biology Research Unit led by Prof. Andrea Cavalli.
The position is for Postdocs with extensive hands-on research experience in medicinal chemistry, particularly in the design, synthesis, and characterization of bioactive small molecules. The role requires significant experience with diverse synthetic methodologies and compound optimization techniques. Candidates should have a keen interest in integrating a diverse array of complementary computational, biophysical, cellular, and analytical data to assess compound activity and efficacy, facilitating further development. Responsibilities also include publishing results in scientific journals, presenting findings at conferences, and mentoring PhD students. Additionally, the role involves staying current with advancements in medicinal chemistry and contributing to grant writing for research funding. This position is ideal for developing expertise in drug discovery and translational science.
The successful candidate will play relevant roles in drug discovery projects, contributing to the design, synthesis, and optimization of novel therapeutic compounds. He/she will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to identify biological targets and develop high-affinity molecules through structure-activity relationship (SAR) studies. The candidate will utilize advanced medicinal chemistry techniques to enhance the potency, selectivity, and pharmacokinetic properties of hit and lead compounds. Additionally, he/she will participate in data analysis and interpretation to guide decision-making, ultimately supporting the transition of promising candidates into preclinical development.
Specific activities are:
* Design and synthesize novel compounds to support drug discovery, applying medicinal chemistry principles to optimize pharmacological properties and implementing innovative synthetic strategies for efficiency and scalability.
* Perform SAR studies to refine hit and lead compounds. Utilize advanced analytical techniques, including HPLC, LC-MS, NMR, and other methods to characterize and purify compounds.
* Work within cross-functional teams to integrate chemistry efforts, contributing to experiment planning and execution aligned with project goals.
* Stay updated on scientific advancements with literature search software, applying new approaches to solve complex challenges and develop fresh research strategies.
* Keep accurate records of experiments, preparing scientific reports, manuscripts, and presentations for internal and external meetings.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
* PhD degree in organic synthesis, synthetic medicinal chemistry, or pharmaceutical sciences.
* Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in medicinal and/or organic chemistry.
* Proven track record of successful compound design, synthesis, and optimization and demonstrated ability to design and execute experiments independently.
* Technical Skills: Proficiency in organic synthetic and purification techniques as well as analytical methods, including NMR, MS, HPLC, and other relevant technologies.
* Willingness to take on diverse tasks and responsibilities as needed.
* Excellent English communication skills, creativity, and marked enthusiasm for research.
* Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a highly interdisciplinary environment.
