Offer Description
Short Description:
The Physics section at Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore (UCSC) and its affiliated University Hospital, Fondazione Policlinico Universitario Agostino Gemelli IRCCS, is currently seeking a PhD student ("Doctoral Candidate", DC) starting from January 2025 to work on A nanotechnology-aided THz platform for liver cancer diagnosis within the framework of the European Doctoral Training Network “TeraIBS” (TeraIBS Doctoral Candidate 9).
The driving force for TeraIBs: is to develop a radically new technology based on Terahertz (THz) radiation for biomedical detection and diagnosis, based on a team of 11 Doctoral Candidates with the necessary in-depth background in devices and systems, spectroscopic techniques, and biomedical measurement knowledge using THz radiation.
Job Description:
* Project title: A nanotechnology-aided THz platform for liver cancer diagnosis
* Research Objectives: The focus of this project will be to develop a novel THz metasurface specifically designed for the sensing of extracellular vesicles (EVs), with potential applications in the early detection of liver cancer.
* Expected Results: The project is expected to yield a THz-based platform providing innovative spectral markers for the early detection of cancer, with a particular focus on Hepatocellular Carcinoma.
* Professional Growth and Development: In addition to conducting groundbreaking research, the selected candidate will have access to professional development opportunities, including technical workshops and transferable skills courses organized by academic and industrial partners.
Job Requirements:
* A master’s degree (or an equivalent university degree) in Biology, Biotechnology, Chemistry, Physics, Bioengineering, or related fields.
* Isolation and purification of extracellular vesicles from various biofluids using established protocols.
* Conducting western blot analysis for the characterization of vesicles.
* Advanced microscopy techniques, including electron microscopy, confocal microscopy, and atomic force microscopy.
* Spectroscopic techniques and advanced data analysis methods.
The ideal candidate should also demonstrate:
* Strong motivation to deliver groundbreaking work and an ambition to excel.
* A research-oriented attitude and ability to work in an interdisciplinary team.
* Fluency in spoken and written English (C1 level).
Conditions of Employment:
* The successful candidates will receive an attractive salary in accordance with the MSCA regulations for Doctoral Candidate DCs.
* The period of employment in UCSC is 36 months.
* The Doctoral Candidates are expected to travel to network partners under three secondments for a typical duration of 2-6 months.
Eligibility and mobility criteria:
* The recruited researchers must be doctoral candidates, i.e. not already in possession of a doctoral degree at the date of the recruitment.
* The recruited researchers must be employed full-time.
* Recruited researchers can be of any nationality and must comply with the mobility rule.
Application Procedure:
Documents requested:
* Complete CV.
* Motivation letter.
* Scan of certificates showing BSc, MSc and other courses followed.
* Up to three recommendation letters.
* Up to two written scientific reports in English.
* Eligibility Statement.
Selection Process:
The selection process of invited candidates contains two phases.
